Growing up, I was seen as the poster child of happiness. I was up-beat, optimistic, and cheerful. Even when encountering adversities, I was always able to find the silver lining and lift myself up. I have a great sense of humor and I enjoy bringing smiles to others.
However, the once in a lifetime pandemic changed everything. Just like everyone else, my life was turned upside down by COVID. While I did not suffer from unemployment or severe illness, the prolonged social isolation had damaged my psyche. Not being able to see my parents who live in China for four years due to the country’s zero COVID policy, working from home for three years and not staying connected with the friends and community, I was already suffering from a severe deprivation of social connection. The departure of my closest work partner of seven years last summer was the last straw which broke this camel’s back. I started to feel an extreme sense of loneliness and at times overwhelmed by anxiety. On top of feeling low in spirit, I felt a tremendous sense of loss as I mourned the demise of my “super power” to be happy. Now, having studied positive psychology, I understand that in addition to the primary suffering, I developed a secondary suffering as an unhealthy response to the primary trigger.
But this blog would not be birthed if I stayed stuck in the “mud”. On the contrary, my choice to stay hopeful and find light, helped by my scientific mind and problem solving skills, had prompted me to seek help in a variety of ways. The tipping point took place one month ago when I was introduced to Positive Psychology by the universe (more on that story later) and my life was transformed for the better.
I now not only enjoy sustained happiness again. I also have a deeper understanding of the science behind happiness and learnt a repertoire of tools and strategies to cultivate this amazing feeling.
I wish you all well and I look forward to sharing my journey with you. If you also feel “stuck” in your life, I hope my story and experiences help bring you some hope and shed some light on those dark and stormy nights.
Stay tuned.
